GP Appointment Guide

Key Things to Remember

One Issue Per Appointment

GP appointments are typically 10 minutes long. Focus on your most pressing concern to get the best outcome.

Impact on Daily Life

Be specific about how your symptoms affect you. For example: "The itching keeps me awake most nights" or "I can't concentrate at work due to constant discomfort".

NHS Treatment Guidelines

All GPs prescribe medications following NICE guidelines - these determine which treatments can be offered at each stage of your eczema journey.

Dealing with a flare-up?

If you're experiencing a severe flare-up, we have a specific guide for urgent GP appointments.

Preparation
  • Document Your Symptoms

Try to keep a diary of your symptoms before your appointment:

    • Severity of symptoms (scale 1-10)
    • What makes it better/worse
    • Impact on sleep and daily activities
    • Any potential triggers you've noticed
  • Take Photos

Document flare-ups, especially if your skin tends to improve before appointments

During the Appointment

Be Clear and Direct

Start with: "I'm here today because..." and state your main concern immediately

Ask These Questions

  • What is this treatment meant to do?
  • How long should I use it for?
  • What should I do if it doesn't help?
  • When should I come back?
Managing Prescription Costs

NHS Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC)

If you need multiple prescriptions, a PPC could save you money. It's like a season ticket for prescriptions:

  • 3-month certificate: £31.25 (as of 2024)
  • 12-month certificate: £111.60 (as of 2024)
  • Can be paid in 10 monthly installments for annual certificate
  • Covers all NHS prescriptions during the period

When is it worth it?

With prescription items costing £9.65 each (as of 2024):

  • 3-month PPC saves money if you need more than 3 items in 3 months
  • 12-month PPC saves money if you need more than 11 items per year

You can buy a PPC online through the NHS website or at many pharmacies. The certificate can start from the date of purchase or a future date within one month.
