Dupixent (Dupilumab)

What is Dupixent?

Dupixent (dupilumab) is a biologic medication used to treat moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in people who haven't responded well to topical treatments or other systemic therapies. It works by targeting specific parts of the immune system to reduce inflammation and prevent flare-ups.

NHS Eligibility

NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) has approved Dupixent for:

  • Age Requirements

    Adults and children aged 6 and above with moderate-to-severe eczema

  • Previous Treatment

    Must have tried topical steroids and at least one systemic treatment (like cyclosporine, methotrexate, or azathioprine)

  • Impact on Life

    Eczema must significantly impact quality of life (e.g., sleep disruption, frequent infections)

How is it Taken?

Dosing Schedule

  • Self-administered injection under the skin
  • First dose given at hospital or GP surgery
  • Usually every two weeks for adults
  • Some children may have four-week dosing
Getting Dupixent on the NHS
  1. Get a dermatologist referral if you're not already seeing one
  2. Dermatologist assessment based on NICE guidelines
  3. 16-week trial period to assess effectiveness
  4. If effective, treatment can continue long-term

Private Treatment Costs

If not eligible via NHS, private prescriptions cost around £1,300 per month. Private insurance may cover it, but policies vary.

Side Effects & Safety

Common side effects include:

  • Eye inflammation (conjunctivitis, dry eyes)
  • Injection site reactions (redness, swelling, itching)
  • Cold sores (herpes simplex virus flare-ups)
  • Less common: Joint pain, headaches

Regular Monitoring

Regular eye exams may be needed. Report any new symptoms to your healthcare team promptly.
