Treatments

Protopic & Tacrolimus

What is Protopic?

Protopic (tacrolimus) is a topical calcineurin inhibitor that helps control eczema by reducing inflammation and suppressing immune system activity in the skin. Unlike topical steroids, it can be used safely on sensitive areas and for longer periods.

Treatment Duration

Can be used for longer periods than topical steroids, especially on sensitive areas

About Withdrawal Concerns

Evidence-Based Information:

Unlike topical steroids, there is no medically significant evidence that Protopic causes withdrawal effects. Any return of symptoms after stopping treatment is likely the underlying eczema rather than withdrawal.

This is one reason why Protopic can be particularly useful for long-term management, especially in sensitive areas where prolonged steroid use might be concerning.

Important Safety Information

Avoid sun exposure and use sun protection while using Protopic.

Your skin may be more sensitive to sunlight while using this medication. Use appropriate sun protection and minimize exposure to sunlight and UV light.

When to Use
  • Sensitive Areas

Safe for use on face, eyelids, and other delicate areas

  • Long-term Control

Can be used for maintenance therapy to prevent flares

  • Steroid-Sparing

Alternative when trying to reduce topical steroid use

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Burning or stinging sensation (usually improves after a few days)
  • Skin redness or warmth
  • Increased skin sensitivity
  • Itching

Initial Reaction:

A burning sensation is common when first applying Protopic. This usually decreases and disappears with continued use. Applying after moisturizer can help reduce this sensation.

How to Use
  • 1.Apply a thin layer to affected areas only
  • 2.Use twice daily initially, then reduce as directed
  • 3.Can be applied after moisturizer to reduce stinging
  • 4.Wash hands after application unless treating hands

Sun Protection

Use high SPF sunscreen and minimize sun exposure while using Protopic

Important Notes

Long-term Use:

While safer for long-term use than topical steroids, follow your doctor's instructions about frequency and duration of use.

  • Do not cover treated areas with bandages or wraps
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure
  • Report any skin infections to your doctor
  • Keep regular follow-up appointments
